Ambleside is a busy, lively yet small town at the northern end of Lake Windermere. This is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts
with local business' catering for these visitors. With the Fairfield horseshoe and many other hiking routes
nearby, Ambleside is a very popular town for all fell walkers. There are plenty of hiking and climbing shops as
well as many local camp sites. The "Zefirrelis" Restaurant/Cinema/Jazz bar is a must see and there are many other great bars
in the town.
Grasmere is probably the Cumbria's most popular village, thanks to William Wordsworth
(1770-1850). Today Grasmere is totally given over to tourism, with plenty
of gift shops, and places to eat and stay. Most of the buildings date from the 19th or
early 20th Century, though the farms around Grasmere are much older. The Church dates
from the 13th Century. It is popular with coach parties during the busy summer months.
The stunningly located town of Keswick, nestled on the shores of Derwentwater, has a wide array
of shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the five major lakes, the 5000 year old castlerig stone
circle, picturesque valleys and unspoilt villages with the mountains of Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Scafell all within easy reach.
Famous for its weekday markets and summer music festival, Keswick is an ideal place to stay
for anyone visiting the Lake District.
Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around
9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all
within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks
and rambles, both gentle and demanding. The town’s most famous export must be Kendal Mint Cake.
Joseph Wiper came up with the original recipe for the Everest conquering energy bars, they are
as popular today as they were 140 years ago.
