Seven Great Days Out in the Lake District
Check out the following 'Seven Great Days Out'. All of the places below have websites which we will eventually be linking to.
Take a Steamer Down Lake Windermere. This has to be one of the great days out. You can take one of these beautiful boats from either lakeside, at the very bottom of the lake, Bowness half way up, or from Ambleside (Waterhead) at the very top of the lake. The Steamers … Swan, Teal or Tern … Start there cruises at about 10 am and finish at around 6:15 pm. They run from Late March to early November. The views from the boats are stunning. Many beautiful Lakeside mansions can be seen from the boats, and refreshments are available on board. This is a fantastic way to see the largest lake in England.
Visit the Lost Town of Mardale. There are many great days out to be had in the Lakes. In the summer months, when the levels on Haweswater are low, the lost town of Mardale can be seen. Mardale was a small village that was evacuated and flooded during the thirties, to create a four mile long reservoir to supply the city of Manchester with water. It is quite strange to see the small footbridge over the river that once flowed through the village to come to the surface. Many buildings were knocked down and some that remained are now barely recognisable. This trip can only be made in times of drought. Check with the local authorities whether the levels have fallen.Keswick Cars of the Stars Motor Museum. This museum opened its doors in 1989 to the public. It was officially opened by Gerry Anderson, the creator and puppeteer of the Thunderbirds. As one of the great days out, it is quite unusual, if a little surreal, to have this wonderful museum slap bang in the middle of England’s most scenic county. Once inside, visitors get to see some of the most famous cars ever seen on the silver screen. These are not replicas or copies … no, these are the actual vehicles used during the filming. You can see James bonds Aston Martin, and many other 007 cars. The fantastic flying Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Laurel and hardy’s Model T Ford. Batmobile, the Flintstones Car and many others including my favourite … Herbie The Love Bug. A great family day out.“Go Ape” at Grizedale ForrestFancy swinging through the trees like an ape? Or perhaps walking a tightrope in the tree canopy is your thing, or maybe you fancy walking across open planks 50 ft up. If any of these appeal to you, then “Go Ape” might just be up your street. Located at the Grizedale Forest visitor center, "Go Ape" is a safe way to experience the thrills, and spills, of extreme tree climbing! With experienced, fully trained instructors and the latest safety equipment, you are sure to have the thrill of a lifetime at "Go Ape"!
The Ravenglass to Eskdale Steam Railway. This beautifully restored steam railway runs for some seven miles, through stunning countryside in both open top and covered carriages. This railway is becoming increasingly popular with cyclists who wish to cycle the “Eskdale Trail”. One carriage is reserved for cycles (booking reqd).Single Adult fares can be bought for as little as £6, and family ride all day tickets can be bought for £26. The railway runs all year round, but check the website for details. Another one of the great days out in the Lake District. South Lakeland Wild Animal Park. This is one of the quaintest animal parks in the whole of the UK, but that does not mean it does not have the wildlife. You will find Bears, Tigers, Lions, Giraffe, Rhino’s plus much much more. This zoo is also committed to conservation, ploughing money back in to wildlife projects around the world through its two charities. The zoo holds many fun events throughout the year, and at certain times opens its doors free to senior citizens … Check site for details … All in all this is a great fun day out for all the family.
The Grizedale Forest Sculpture Trail. This is one of my favourites. Grizedale forest has 8 marked out woodland walks covering some 26 miles. Internationally renowned for its forest sculptures, Grizedale Forest Park offers the complete day out with an extensive range of waymarked paths, picnic areas, forest roads, tracks and bridleways. A guidemap can be purchased from the Visitor Centre, which shows all the waymarked routes in detail. The sculptures dotted along the way are fascinating, some of them huge and interactive, some mazes and some difficult to find. A great day out in the woods.
