The Three Pubs Walk. ( Elterwater Walk )Skelwith Bridge and Elterwater

Elterwater Walk (Three pub walk). Skelwith Bridge, Elterwater and little langdale.
Length. Approx 5 miles.
Time 3 hrs.
Height …. The Elterwater Walk is Lake level most the way. However, after Elterwater a steep stony track heads up a hillside for some 500m. After that the trail is mainly level footpaths through fields.

Elterwater Walk.
From Ambleside take the A593 road and head for the Langdales. Skelwith Bridge can be found at a Y junction about 2 ˝ miles down this road. Parking is allowed on the road on the right hand fork.

This is the first Pub on the route. It caters for day visitors and families. Meals and bar snacks are available. Popular in summer when visitors can sit outside by the river.

Behind the pub is a slate workshop, head up between these buildings on to a path with the river on your left. Skelwith force is a popular attraction, with some brave souls jumping off the top rocks over the waterfall in to the pool …Not Recommended!

Continue along the path through a gate in to a field …stay left by the river and follow this path right through to Elterwater.

This scenic little village is popular with walkers on their way to the Langdales, however this short walk takes in its smaller brother, the Little Langdales. At the heart of the village on the green is the Britannia Inn ( I was once snow bound in this pub. 7 hours in a pub, could’nt get out …I don’t know how I got through it. The Guinness helped.) Also in the village is the Judy Boyes Art Studio . Judy, perhaps lakeland’s most famous artist, is a fine water colour artist, specialising in the cottages, rivers, and dales of the Lake District. If you have ever browsed the Gallery windows of Bowness, Ambleside or Keswick you will surely have seen her work.

Leave Elterwater walk over the bridge and follow the lane straight ahead passing the Youth Hostel on your right. After a short distance take the track to your right. This track gets narrower and stonier and becomes quite steep. At the top go through a five barred gate and after a further 150 yds look for a footpath crossing a field. Take this path which eventually brings you out at Wilsons Place. The walk continues to your left … however if you walk down the lane to your right for a couple of hundred yds you will find the “Three Shires Inn” another lovely pub to stop for lunch.

Ok. From Wilsons Place head down the lane to your left and take the footpath through the gate and across the field crossing a footbridge at the bottom. Work your way along the path till you come to Stang End Farm. Here take the road down to your left with stunning views of Little Langdale. Head through a farm yard on your left and cross another field before entering colwith wood. As you enter the wood there is a fork in the path by a huge sycamore tree. Take the lower left hand path down to the force. Continue on through the woods until arriving at the road. Here take the path to your right for 50 yards before entering a field on your left. Cross the field and up some rough wooden steps to another gate. Cross the field and go through a gate straight ahead. Take the track past the TocLog cottage.

You are now on the home stretch. Continue with the path and the blue arrow signs and eventually it will bring you back out at the Skelwith Bridge hotel..... just in time for one last refreshing drink.
